Yoon requests Kishida to halt wastewater discharge if radiation levels exceeded - The Korea Herald

President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea has urged Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to halt the discharge of wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant if radiation levels are still above safe limits even after filtering out radioactive elements. President Yoon also requested that Japan share real-time monitoring information with Korea and allow Korean experts to participate in the discharge process. Prime Minister Kishida assured President Yoon that no discharge that jeopardizes the safety of either country's people would occur and promised to take necessary measures if radiation levels exceeded safe limits. The International Atomic Energy Agency is conducting a review of Japan's discharge plan, which was endorsed by the agency last week. However, opposition parties in Korea and Pacific island nations have expressed safety concerns. The two leaders also condemned North Korea's recent intercontinental ballistic missile test and agreed to work closely with the United States to address the threat. President Yoon and Prime Minister Kishida welcomed the proposal for a three-way meeting with US President Joe Biden, aiming to strengthen cooperation in dealing with Pyongyang.
