Westinghouse-led Project will Secure VVER Fuel Supply in Europe and Ukraine - Westinghouse Electric Company

A consortium led by Westinghouse has been chosen by the European Union (EU) to develop and provide a secure nuclear fuel supply for Russian-designed pressurized water reactors (VVER). The project, called APIS, aims to diversify the sources of VVER fuel by strengthening European capabilities in design, manufacturing, and supply. The consortium consists of 12 European partners and is part of the EU's Horizon Europe program. The project will receive a contribution of 10 million euros from the Euratom Work Programme 2023-2025. Currently, there are over 30 VVER-440 and VVER-1000 design reactors operating in the EU and Ukraine. The consortium brings together utilities, fuel manufacturers, and fuel engineering and research organizations from eight countries. The APIS project aims to mitigate the supply chain risk and reduce dependence on VVER fuel supply from Russia, offering a robust European solution for long-term energy security. More information can be found on the APIS project website, www.apis-project.eu.
