Users of ionising radiation urged to obtain authorisation - Jamaica Observer

The Hazardous Substances Regulatory Authority (HSRA) in Jamaica is urgently urging all facilities and professionals using ionising radiation to obtain official authorisation, emphasizing that it is a legal requirement. Dr. Cliff Riley, the director general, stated that authorisation ensures safety standards are met and protects both operators and the public. Although over 50% of facilities are authorised, the HSRA aims for at least 87% by 2027. While progress is notable in public and medical sectors, the dental and veterinary sectors lag significantly with only 26% and 25% authorisation rates respectively. The HSRA plans to escalate compliance measures, including potential prosecutions for non-compliance, as they focus on increasing protection and oversight across all areas.
