A study conducted by investigators at Leo Cancer Care in the United Kingdom suggests that delivering radiation therapy to prostate cancer patients in the upright position may have benefits over the supine position. The study found that anatomical changes in the male pelvis in the upright position could stabilize the prostate and allow for easier treatment. The distance between the tip of the S1 vertebra and the bladder neck was larger in the upright position, indicating a shift of the prostate inferiorly. The bladder length was also longer in the upright position. The authors concluded that there was nothing observed that would prevent prostate treatments in the upright position, and further research is recommended.
