A research paper by Dr Osayande Evbuomwan, a Senior Lecturer and Medical Specialist at the University of the Free State, has won the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) International Best Abstract Award for South Africa. The paper focused on evaluating the efficacy of a new nuclear medicine radiopharmaceutical in identifying active disease in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The study found that the radiopharmaceutical, known as Tc – 99m glucosamine, is highly sensitive in identifying synovitis and can offer prognostic information in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This is the first study to assess the prognostic value of this radiopharmaceutical in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Dr Evbuomwan is also working on comparing the radiopharmaceutical to ultrasound and clinical evaluation. Dr Gerrit Engelbrecht, Clinical Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the UFS, expressed pride in Dr Evbuomwan's accomplishment, particularly as he outperformed candidates from larger, highly funded institutions.
