Astral Systems, a company based in Dorset Innovation Park in Winfrith, is developing a Multi-State Fusion Reactor that has the potential to revolutionize cancer diagnosis and treatment. The reactor can produce medical isotopes used in scanning for cancer and treating tumors and cancerous cells on a smaller and quicker scale compared to current methods. Dr. Tom Wallace-Smith and Talmon Firestone, the founders of Astral, have received a £1 million research grant from Bristol University to optimize and commercialize their technology. They recently completed a research contract with the UK Atomic Energy Authority to set up their fusion reactor facility. Astral is now seeking a £1.5 million grant from the UKAE's Fusion Industry Programme for further research and plans to open a larger site in the Dorset Innovation Park. The company aims to address current challenges in cancer diagnosis and treatment caused by the Covid pandemic and improve the production of medical isotopes without relying on large nuclear power plants.
