Mizzou’s Veterinary Health Center is utilizing positron emission tomography (PET) scans to improve the diagnosis and treatment of animals, thanks to alumni Joni and Kevin Lunceford, who transitioned from human to animal nuclear medicine. This field is uncommon, with only seven veterinary PET-CT locations in the U.S., and the Luncefords emphasize the unique challenges of working with non-verbal patients. Their education at the University of Missouri has provided them with key skills that benefit their current work, allowing for innovative care and potential research developments in veterinary medicine. Additionally, the university is set to hold the 2024 Pearls of Production conference on Oct. 29 and Nov. 1, and is expanding operations at its Research Reactor to scale up production of the lutetium-177 radioisotope, which is critical for medical applications.
