Study Reveals Sharp Rise in Imaging Turnaround Times from 2023 to 2024 - HCI Innovation Group

A new study from the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute revealed a significant increase in imaging interpretation turnaround times, which rose by 27 percent from 2023 to 2024. Analyzing 2.9 million outpatient Medicare imaging studies, the findings, published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology, highlight a 177 percent increase in turnaround times from 2014 to 2024, with a majority of this rise occurring between 2022 and 2024. Dr. Eric Christensen noted that the escalation in turnaround times, particularly emphasized in 2023 and 2024, signifies a persistent trend amid a shortage of radiologists. The coauthor, Dr. Greg Nicola, expressed concerns about the capacity of the radiology workforce to manage increasing imaging demands effectively.
