Analyzing 2.9 million outpatient Medicare imaging studies, the findings, published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology, highlight a 177 percent increase in turnaround times from 2014 to 2024, with a majority of this rise occurring between 2022 and 2024. Dr. Eric Christensen noted that the escalation in turnaround times, particularly emphasized in 2023 and 2024, signifies a persistent trend amid a shortage of radiologists. The coauthor, Dr. Greg Nicola, expressed concerns about the capacity of the radiology workforce to manage increasing imaging demands effectively.
