Society of Interventional Radiology announces support for bill that would cut $700M in Medicare costs - Radiology Business

The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) has announced its support for the Radiology Outpatient Ordering Transmission (ROOT) Act, which requires physicians to consult appropriate-use criteria before ordering advanced diagnostic imaging. This legislation, introduced last year in both the House and Senate, aims to address concerns about unnecessary imaging procedures and is backed by the American College of Radiology. While SIR supports the bill for its potential to save Medicare up to $700 million annually by reducing low-value imaging, the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology opposes it, fearing that Medicare might use inappropriate criteria for heart imaging. The legislation is expected to also lead to significant savings for beneficiaries over the next decade. Notably, exemptions apply for clinical trials, small or rural practices, and screening imaging services.
