SCAI leaders 'on a mission' to improve cath lab protection from radiation, orthopedic injury - Cardiovascular Business

A 2023 survey by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) has highlighted ongoing occupational hazards faced by interventional cardiologists and cath lab staff, particularly concerning radiation exposure and orthopedic issues caused by heavy lead aprons. Despite advancements in technology to reduce radiation doses, risks remain significant, increasing rates of cancer and cataracts among staff. SCAI President James B. Hermiller emphasized the urgent need for stronger protective measures to ensure the long-term health of medical professionals. The survey revealed that over 60% of respondents reported chronic orthopedic injuries, with implications for career longevity and a declining number of women entering the field due to safety concerns. Innovative solutions like robotic systems and passive shielding technologies are emerging, although cost and administrative barriers hinder widespread adoption. SCAI aims to push for improved radiation safety education and a formal consensus statement on safety measures by early 2025.
