An Arizona physician, Dr. Irfan Fazil, has been sentenced to 7.5 years in prison for defrauding the state Medicaid program of over $36 million through a large-scale radiology scam. Convicted on four felony counts, including fraudulent schemes and theft, Fazil used his businesses to bill Medicaid for thousands of unnecessary procedures within a brief period. His actions led to a dramatic 671% increase in claims, as he billed for an impossible number of services. Fazil also improperly prescribed medication to his wife while she was abroad. In addition to his prison sentence, he will face seven years of probation, must forfeit numerous assets, surrender his medical license, and repay more than $36 million in restitution. The investigation into his activities revealed alarming billing practices, including one case where a patient was billed for over 1,700 X-rays in six months.
