New research published in The Journal of Nuclear Medicine indicates that PSMA PET/CT-targeted biopsies can identify clinically significant prostate cancers in 37% of men who have negative or inconclusive MRI results, compared to a 21% detection rate using systematic biopsy alone. The combination of these methods raises the detection rate to 41%. Conducted by researchers from the IRCCS Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria di Bologna, the study involved 63 men and highlights that negative MRI results do not exclude clinically significant cancers, which could lead to missed diagnoses and unnecessary repeat biopsies. The findings suggest that PSMA PET/CT can enhance biopsy targeting, ultimately improving the identification of cancers in patients with prior non-diagnostic MRI results.
