The Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) has announced that they will be closely monitoring mineral exploration across the country, with a particular focus on uranium exploration, due to potential dangers to life and the environment. The KNRA has started a nationwide radiation mapping program for regulatory oversight and radiation protection purposes. The announcement was made by the Director for Standards at the KNRA, Shadrack Kiti, during a training session on nuclear safety in Nairobi. The session was attended by representatives from the Kenya Defence Forces, the health sector, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The experts at the session highlighted the benefits of nuclear technology in addressing climate change and food insecurity, and called for more awareness and understanding of nuclear safety among policy and decision-makers. The KNRA hopes that the training session will lead to better oversight and understanding of nuclear safety issues among key stakeholders. The agency reiterates its commitment to honoring IAEA safety guidelines and code of conduct.
