New state-of-the-art test identifies aggressive prostate cancer - The Mountaineer

New research indicates that PSMA PET/CT scans could significantly reduce the need for invasive prostate biopsies by identifying aggressive cancer cells without the discomfort associated with traditional biopsy procedures. The study revealed that this advanced imaging technique can safely halve the number of patients who require a biopsy following inconclusive MRI results, while still effectively detecting harmful cancers. Conducted as part of the Primary2 trial, the results showed that patients who did not exhibit signs of cancer through PSMA PET/CT scans were spared from undergoing unnecessary biopsies, thus tackling concerns about overdiagnosis and associated anxiety. The findings are being presented at the European Association of Urology Congress in March.
