New IAEA Publication on Protecting People and Environment from Radiation - International Atomic Energy Agency

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has introduced a new safety guide aimed at assisting countries in developing and implementing radiation monitoring programs to safeguard public health and the environment from the dangers of ionizing radiation. This guide, titled "Monitoring for Protection of the Public and the Environment," establishes a practical framework for enhancing radiation protection and fostering public trust. It provides comprehensive instructions on planning and conducting monitoring programs tailored to varying risk levels and encompasses various scenarios, including routine releases from facilities and emergency situations. The guide outlines responsibilities for different organizations involved in monitoring and highlights three key types of monitoring: source, environmental, and individual monitoring. It replaces a previous guide from 2005 and aligns with updated international standards aimed at improving radiation safety practices globally.
