Mayo Clinic researchers have discovered that adding molecular breast imaging (MBI) to traditional 3D mammograms significantly improves the detection of breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue. Their study, which involved nearly 3,000 women aged 40-75, found that this combined screening method more than doubled the detection rate of cancer compared to using mammography alone. While the initial screening saw an increase in callbacks for additional testing, this number decreased by half in subsequent screenings. The researchers are also developing an algorithm to reduce the imaging time, enhancing the comfort and accessibility of the screening process. MBI combined with mammography is currently available at multiple sites across the U.S., including various Mayo Clinic locations.
