Mobile Head CT Reduces Occupational Exposure in NICU - EMJ

A new study has found that a mobile head CT system with integrated shielding can reduce occupational radiation exposure for healthcare professionals in neurointensive care units (NICUs) by up to 99%. The research suggests that, by implementing appropriate safety measures, radiation doses to clinicians and nurses can remain very low during routine imaging of critically ill patients. The evaluated CT system used a foldable lead curtain and a detachable lead shield, resulting in a significant reduction in radiation exposure. Over a three-month period, personal dosimetry showed minimal exposure levels, indicating effective shielding. This technology could simplify workflows in busy NICUs while still maintaining safety, although the study was limited to a single NICU and a short observation period, suggesting further evaluation is needed for broader applicability.
