Mission to Japan: Spotlight on medical radioisotopes, capacity building and nuclear education - Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA)

NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV, led a delegation to Japan from July 25 to August 4, 2025, engaging in discussions with academic and medical representatives about nuclear medicine and innovative cancer treatments. Significant meetings included a dialogue with Jun Hatazawa from Osaka University on medical radioisotopes and a collaboration discussion with Tomonari Yashiro, President of Tokyo City University, following a recent Memorandum of Understanding. The delegation also visited facilities of the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) to explore future collaborations. Magwood delivered a lecture at Tokyo Metropolitan Toyama High School, emphasizing nuclear energy developments, and participated in discussions at the ninth International Forum on the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, which highlighted community impacts and plans for the site. The mission concluded with an MoU signing with Kindai University.
