Mammography Study Shows Elevated Future Breast Cancer Risk with Initial Concordance of Radiologist and AI Interpretation - diagnosticimaging.com

A recent study published in *Radiology: Artificial Intelligence* has found that concordant mammography assessments by radiologists and AI are significantly associated with a higher likelihood of future breast cancer compared to assessments made by radiologists alone. The research, which involved over 82,000 women, indicates that those with concordant-positive findings have a 4.5-fold higher risk of incidental breast cancer within five years. Conversely, women with positive radiologist assessments but negative AI evaluations had only a 15% increased risk. The study suggests that enhanced surveillance or risk-reducing interventions may be warranted for women with concordant-positive results, as they exceed high-risk thresholds set by major health organizations. The study also noted that many of the new breast cancers diagnosed during the follow-up period were invasive and localized. The findings, however, may be limited in their applicability due to the study's specific cohort characteristics, including age and breast density.
