Kyrgyzstan is set to join conventions governing nuclear safety, as the Parliamentary Committee has reviewed draft laws for accession to the Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident and the Convention on Assistance in Case of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency, both established in 1986. Deputy Minister Asel Raimkulova emphasized the importance of protecting against radiation threats, given the presence of active radioactive sources in industry and medicine. Accession will grant Kyrgyzstan access to crucial information on nuclear incidents, technical support, and opportunities to collaborate internationally, enhancing the country’s capabilities in radiation safety. Concerns were raised by deputies regarding the storage of uranium waste and compliance with environmental standards. The Ministry highlighted the benefits of such accession, referencing the timely information shared post-Fukushima which helped mitigate damage and manage public response.
