Kazakhstan has announced plans to create a nuclear safety zone at the former Semipalatinsk test site and surrounding territories, which were exposed to excess radioactive contamination. The area will be rehabilitated to allow for a gradual return of its lands to economic use. A comprehensive environmental survey will determine the contaminated sites where the specialized zone will be established. The law also includes measures to limit the spread of radioactive contamination, manage and dispose of radioactive waste, and continuously monitor the level of contamination. The Semipalatinsk test site was used by the Soviet Union for over 450 nuclear tests from 1949 to 1989.
