Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has announced plans to create two "science cities" in Almaty and Kurchatov focused on advancing nuclear energy and medicine. This initiative aims to consolidate scientific and industrial resources related to upcoming nuclear projects, including a new multipurpose reactor in Almaty. The announcement follows a recent referendum where citizens supported the construction of a nuclear power plant. Kazakhstan has partnered with Russia's Rosatom for this project and plans to collaborate with the China National Nuclear Corporation for additional plants. Tokayev emphasized the importance of developing local radiopharmaceuticals to enhance healthcare and announced scholarships to increase the number of nuclear specialists. The country, which holds 40% of the world's uranium reserves, aims to establish a self-sustaining nuclear industry.
