J. Robert Oppenheimer: Death, children, wife, atomic bomb role, trials - USA TODAY

"Oppenheimer" is an upcoming film directed by Christopher Nolan that tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist and director of the lab responsible for developing the atomic bomb. The film features an A-list cast, including Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Josh Hartnett. Oppenheimer was born in New York in 1904 to a wealthy textile importer and a painter. He studied physics and other subjects at Harvard University and the University of Cambridge before earning a doctorate in physics at the University of Göttingen. He later taught physics at the University of California at Berkeley and the California Institute of Technology. Oppenheimer was chosen by General Leslie Groves to lead the top-secret Manhattan Project at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, where scientists developed the world's first nuclear test device and atomic bombs. Oppenheimer's involvement with communist organizations during the era of McCarthyism was a source of controversy, but he was ultimately cleared to work on the project. His security clearance was later revoked, and he died in 1967.
