Interventional radiology underrepresented in cancer guideline development - Radiology Business

Research indicates that interventional radiology (IR) is significantly underrepresented in the development of U.S. cancer treatment guidelines, particularly those issued by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). An analysis found that out of 2,358 panel positions across 66 committees, only 36 (1.53%) were filled by IR specialists. In a focused study on 20 clinically relevant committees, IR representation slightly increased to 4.5% (34 out of 756 slots). The findings reveal a heavy reliance on a small group of radiologists, with some holding multiple positions. The authors suggest that there's an opportunity for broader engagement of interventional radiologists in guideline development to ensure that image-guided therapies are adequately represented.
