Increase in radiation safety incidents reported - Medical Independent

In 2025, an increase in radiation safety incidents was reported, with 1,664 incidents involving radiology procedures compared to 1,369 in 2024, according to the annual report from the National Radiation Protection Committee (NRPC). The report suggests that this increase reflects a strong safety culture within radiology and radiotherapy. Of the 1,664 incidents, 40 were deemed harmful, 769 non-harmful, and 855 were near-misses. Radiotherapy services reported 316 incidents, with one classified as minor but harmful. The NRPC highlighted improved reporting practices as a crucial factor in the rise of near-miss incidents, indicating increased awareness and responsiveness among medical staff. However, they also noted that fluctuations in activity levels and service delivery changes might influence the annual variations in incident numbers. Despite these incidents, the HSE emphasized that most staff exposures were low risk and did not result in harm. Overall, the NRPC report aimed to promote safe practice and regulatory compliance while acknowledging the inherent risks associated with working with ionizing radiation.
