The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is developing a Safety Guide for the control of 'existing exposure situations' in response to increasing demand from member countries. The guide will comprehensively cover types of exposure that already exist and require control measures. These include exposure to natural radioactive elements, radionuclides found in goods, as well as exposure from areas contaminated with radioactive material or industrial processes that increase radionuclide concentrations. The Safety Guide is currently being drafted by the IAEA and experts in the field, and will be sent for comments and endorsement before publication. The IAEA has worked in consultation with industry workers to tailor the guide to their needs, and workshops were held globally to gather insights and identify gaps in existing guidance. The guide will help countries implement legal frameworks and apply protection strategies for existing exposure situations. It will join the approximately 115 IAEA Safety Standards publications in supporting countries to comply with the IAEA Safety Requirements.
