The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is developing a Safety Guide for the control of 'existing exposure situations' in response to the increasing demand from member countries. This guide will provide comprehensive coverage of situations involving exposure to ionizing radiation and support a consistent approach to radiation safety. Existing exposure situations encompass various circumstances, including exposure to natural radiation from rocks and soil, cosmic rays, and radionuclides in goods, as well as exposure from contaminated areas and industrial processes. The draft of the publication, titled "Radiation Protection and Safety in Existing Exposure Situations," is being prepared by the IAEA in collaboration with experts in the field. Once finalized, it will be sent for comments and endorsement before its issuance. The IAEA has conducted workshops involving industry workers and experts from around the world to tailor the content of the guide according to their needs and address gaps in existing guidance. The guide aims to assist countries in implementing legal frameworks and protection strategies to ensure a global standard of safety for existing exposure situations. It will join the IAEA's approximately 115 Safety Standards publications in supporting countries to comply with the IAEA Safety Requirements.
