The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conducted an assessment of the safety of two research reactors in Iran and found that the operator has made significant improvements and upgrades in recent years. The team of experts provided recommendations for further enhancement of safety measures and organizational structure. The assessment was conducted at the request of the Iranian government and included a review of various aspects including safety analysis, operation and maintenance programs, and radiation protection. The team concluded that the operator has shown a commitment to safety and noted the effective implementation of refurbishment and upgrades. The IAEA team made recommendations for further improvements. The reactors are mainly used for education, training, and research purposes. The Nuclear Science and Technology Research Institute (NSTRI) has expressed their commitment to safety and will request a follow-up assessment in 2027.
