The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has launched a new Regulatory Infrastructure Development Project (RIDP) aimed at improving radiation safety and nuclear security in Asia and the Pacific. Initiated in December 2024, the project builds on previous successful initiatives in other regions and involves 32 participants from 17 countries. This week-long meeting in Vienna culminated in a draft work plan that addresses the specific regulatory needs of these nations. Key supporters include the governments of Australia, Canada, and the United States. The RIDP seeks to strengthen national regulatory frameworks, enhance collaboration, and promote a culture of safety, contributing to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The initiative is expected to significantly benefit public health and regional stability by ensuring safer practices and bolstering nuclear security.
