IAEA - IRRS Workshop Highlights the Importance of Continuing to ... - International Atomic Energy Agency

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently held workshops with international experts to discuss lessons learned from almost two decades of Integrated Regulatory Review Services (IRRS). The workshops focused on tailoring the scope of IRRS missions after two cycles to improve efficiency without impacting performance, and exploring synergies between IRRS and other IAEA peer review services. The workshops included in-depth discussions and sharing of experiences and lessons learned from IRRS missions. The IAEA expects to have conducted 150 missions by the end of 2024. The IRRS missions aim to strengthen the effectiveness of governmental, legal, and regulatory frameworks for nuclear and radiation safety. The workshops also highlighted the importance of conducting self-assessments of national regulatory frameworks and the challenges of hosting multiple missions. Participants concluded that the IRRS review process had improved since previous workshops in 2018, and called for tailoring the scope of later IRRS missions based on a gap analysis. The IRRS missions were recognized as vital for enhancing nuclear and radiation safety worldwide.
