Hypofractionated Radiation Safe for Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy - Medscape

At the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting, new findings from the phase 3 RT-CHARM trial indicated that hypofractionated radiation treatment regimens are safe and effective for breast cancer patients who are planning reconstruction after mastectomy. This approach shortens the treatment duration from five weeks to three, potentially alleviating financial and logistical burdens for patients, particularly those living far from treatment centers. The study involved 898 women and found no significant differences in reconstruction complications between hypofractionated and conventional regimens. Researchers advocate for hypofractionation to be the new standard of care for these patients.
