How MoltexFLEX aims to democratise nuclear energy with a new ... - The Engineer

MoltexFLEX, a UK-based company, is developing a low-cost and safe molten salt nuclear reactor called FLEX. The reactor uses two separate molten fluoride salts for fuel and coolant, eliminating the need for expensive containment measures. MoltexFLEX's reactor design is expected to reduce costs significantly compared to traditional nuclear power plants. The company is also working on a thermal energy storage concept known as GridReserve, which uses molten chloride salts to store heat and provide flexible grid capacity storage. MoltexFLEX aims to deliver this large-scale storage at a lower cost than alternative technologies like compressed air and hydrogen. The company is targeting GDA (Generic Design Assessment) approval for the FLEX reactor starting in 2024. MoltexFLEX is also exploring international markets and has had preliminary engagements with countries like Japan, Finland, Poland, Brazil, India, and Egypt.
