Global health leaders are gathering this week at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna for the International Conference on Radiation Protection in Medicine, focused on advancing radiation safety in medical practices. The event, organized by the IAEA in collaboration with the WHO and PAHO, aims to address the challenges and opportunities presented by new imaging technologies, radiopharmaceuticals, and AI developments. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized the importance of ensuring safety in medical procedures, as demand for radiation-based diagnostics and treatments continues to grow globally. The conference will review current trends, foster discussions on ensuring patient and worker safety, and formulate a call to action for enhanced radiation protection over the coming decade. With over 650 participants from 120 countries, the conference will cover key issues including the appropriate use of radiation, the role of AI, and lessons learned from past incidents.
