Ghana to install nuclear plant 2030 - Regulatory processes underway - BusinessGhana

The Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) of Ghana is intensifying its efforts to acquire the necessary expertise to oversee the country's plans for its first nuclear power plant in 2030. The authority is currently training its staff overseas with support from the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. These competencies will contribute to the development of regulations, guidelines, and standards for the authorization process of the nuclear power plant's full life cycle. Additionally, the NRA aims to educate the public and work with the media to dispel misconceptions and fears surrounding nuclear power technologies. The Director-General of the NRA, Dr Nii Kwashie Allotey, emphasized the authority's commitment to ensuring the plant meets all technical specifications. The NRA is also responsible for authorizing licenses for companies dealing with ionizing radiation equipment, and enforcement measures are taken against non-compliant organizations. The NRA is working to amend Act 895, which governs its operations, to address areas of ambiguity. The authority is also collaborating with the International Atomic Agency and National Security to ensure the safety of sporting venues for the upcoming African Games. Moreover, the NRA is leading the development of a National Policy for Nuclear and Radiation Safety in Ghana, which demonstrates the country's commitment to protecting humans and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
