A global company, Mistras Group Limited, has been fined £26,000 after a radiographer was overexposed to ionising radiation at their Hartlepool site in December 2020. The incident, which led to an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), occurred when a gamma-emitting radioactive source did not return to its shielded container, resulting in a dose exceeding legal limits. The radiographer, 69 years old, did not complete necessary safety checks or use monitoring equipment, which could have prevented the exposure. Mistras Group admitted to breaches of radiation safety regulations and was ordered to pay an additional £11,353 in costs. HSE officials emphasized the importance of compliance with safety protocols to prevent similar incidents and protect workers.
