Family Driven: Enhancing Global Standards of Radiation Protection of Patients - International Atomic Energy Agency

Chadia Rizk, a Radiation Protection Specialist at the IAEA, shares her journey in radiation protection influenced by personal experiences with family health challenges. Her father’s battle with cancer and her daughter’s Rett syndrome highlighted the need for improved radiation safety and guidance in medical settings. Rizk began her career in 2005 and has significantly impacted occupational radiation safety in Lebanon, including establishing the first ISO-accredited laboratory for radiation protection in the Middle East. Her work with the IAEA has expanded to include training professionals in patient radiation safety, and she emphasizes the importance of optimizing medical exposure and minimizing risks. Rizk has been recognized for her commitment and has been recruited by the IAEA to continue her efforts in developing guidelines and training materials for healthcare professionals globally. The IAEA highlights its commitment to gender equality and fostering opportunities for women in nuclear fields, exemplified through initiatives like the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme and the Lise Meitner Programme.
