A study conducted by the Japanese National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (JNIOS) has found a link between radiation exposure and diabetes. The study focused on emergency workers who responded to the radiation accident at the Fukushima power plant in Japan in 2011. The study found that at least 6.5% of the participants developed diabetes, with those who experienced higher levels of radiation having a 47% higher chance of developing the glucose disorder. The researchers suggest that radiation exposure may adversely affect pancreatic cells responsible for insulin production and increase inflammation, both of which are known factors in the development of diabetes. The study used data from a 2014 study on the long-term health effects of radiation on emergency workers. The researchers plan to continue following up with the participants to further assess the link between radiation exposure and diabetes risk.
