A Dallas-based company, ProtectMed LLC, has been awarded a U.S. patent for a wearable radiation shield designed to protect healthcare workers during X-ray-guided procedures. The patented device, titled “Breast axilla and thyroid radiation shielding device for medical personnel,” adds extra protection around the breast, underarms, chest, and thyroid, which are often left exposed by conventional lead aprons. Inventors Lauren Ramsey, Chet Rees, and Ryan Baldwin were highlighted in a recent roundup noting that Dallas-Fort Worth ranked 10th nationally for patent production, with 114 patents issued the week of September 1. The shield has been shown to significantly reduce radiation exposure in studies, highlighting its potential safety benefits for medical personnel.
