The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) successfully recovered a Cesium-137 radioactive source in Midland County over the weekend. The incident began when a DPS Corporal detected radiation while on routine patrol. After confirming the presence of the radioactive source, the Corporal coordinated with local, state, and federal agencies, including the FBI and the Texas Department of State Health Services, to safely recover the material. The operation involved radiological assessments and the establishment of safety zones, leading to the successful recovery of the 100-millicurie sealed radioactive source, which was buried about 6 to 8 inches underground. There were no injuries or contamination reported, and the recovery underscores the DPS Rad/Nuc Unit's effectiveness in emergency response and hazardous material recovery.
