Commercial AI cuts pulmonary nodule assessment times by up to 25% - Health Imaging

A recent study published in the journal Radiology highlights the potential of AI-enabled software to reduce interpretation times for chest CT scans significantly. Conducted at Erasmus Medical Center, the research analyzed data from 19,433 patients and demonstrated that the use of commercial AI tools for assessing pulmonary nodules reduced median reporting times from 21.3 minutes to 18.2 minutes—a decrease of 14.6%. Additionally, the rate of report completion increased by 17% post-AI implementation. Notably, the largest reductions in reporting times were seen in ECG-gated CT thorax examinations and among thoracic radiologists. However, in emergency settings, the median reporting time actually increased by 7.1%, indicating that AI's effectiveness may vary depending on the clinical context. The authors recommend further research to assess the broader applicability of their findings and the long-term effectiveness of AI in improving diagnostic performance.
