China's advancements in cancer treatment have been marked by the production of Yttrium-90 (Y-90) glass microspheres at the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant. Managed by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), this marks the first large-scale domestic production of the powerful isotope, previously only imported. The microspheres will enable targeted radiation therapy for liver tumors via a minimally invasive procedure called transarterial radioembolization (TARE), minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. CNNC has confirmed that the first batch meets stringent quality standards and will undergo further analysis before clinical use, emphasizing significant improvements in treatment outcomes for liver cancer patients.
