Children With Down Syndrome Experience More Medical Imaging - HealthDay News

Children with Down syndrome undergo more medical imaging and are exposed to higher levels of radiation compared to other children, according to a study published in PLOS ONE. The retrospective cohort study analyzed data from over four million children, including 3,095 with Down syndrome, enrolled in six US integrated healthcare systems from 1996 to 2016. The results showed that children with Down syndrome under the age of one and those aged one to eight received imaging using ionizing radiation at higher rates compared to other children. The authors emphasize the importance of using medical imaging judiciously, ensuring that the potential benefits justify the additional risks.
