A private boarding school in Bath, Kingswood School, has been fined £50,000 for exposing seven children and two staff members to high levels of radioactive gas. Five pupils and two staff members were exposed to radon levels that exceeded the legal limit, with one child experiencing levels nearly 14 times the limit. Radon gas is the second-largest cause of lung cancer in the UK, resulting in over 1,000 fatal cancers each year. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the school knew about the radon problem as far back as 2007 but failed to monitor or take appropriate measures until HSE intervention in 2018. Kingswood School pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations and was fined £50,000 plus costs. The HSE emphasized the need for all workplaces, including schools, to consider radon as a risk and ensure the necessary precautions are taken. Kingswood School declined to comment.
