Benefits' expiration distresses victims of nuclear testing in Nevada, SW - Las Vegas Sun

A program that compensates individuals exposed to radiation from nuclear tests and uranium mining is set to expire next year without an extension. The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, passed in 1990, was designed to compensate those exposed to radiation during nuclear weapons tests or working in the uranium industry. The program covers individuals in 11 states, but most residents of Clark County, Nevada are not eligible despite living near the Nevada Test Site. Efforts are underway in Congress to extend and expand the program, but no hearings have been held on the proposed bills.
