Basic radiation safety standards ‘variably enforced’ for pregnant cardiology trainees - Healio

A survey conducted among pregnant women in cardiology fellowship found that radiation safety standards were inconsistently enforced and that there was a higher rate of pregnancy complications compared to the general population. The survey, distributed to women cardiology fellows and cardiologists who were pregnant during training, aimed to gather information about the variability in how radiation safety practices were encouraged or adhered to during training. The results showed that only 60% of surveyed trainees used radiation badges to monitor exposure, and 23% knew their radiation exposure. Additionally, 40% of respondents reported experiencing pregnancy complications, including miscarriage, low birth weight, preterm delivery, and other complications. While most respondents reported access to radiation shields and dosimeters, they faced difficulties in accessing dosimetry data. The study highlights the need for consistent radiation safety practices and better support for pregnant women in cardiology training.
