Accidents abound, but radiology managers can lead safety efforts - AuntMinnie

Hospitals and imaging centers are still experiencing preventable accidents, according to a presentation at the AHRA annual meeting. Nicole Dhanraj, CEO of South Texas Associates of Radiology, highlighted potential hazards in imaging facilities and ways to prevent accidents. Factors like poorly designed procedures, inadequate equipment checks, and staff inexperience contribute to errors, which can lead to incidents such as overexposure to radiation or improper patient handling. A 2007 report found that 1 in 10 hospital patients could be the victim of an error or accident, while a 2018 study reported over 250,000 deaths annually in the US due to medical errors. Dhanraj emphasized the need for vulnerability and open discussions about mistakes to address the issue, as well as better systems and processes that prioritize employee skills and safety.
