A study on AI digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) standardization has shown promising results in improving radiology workflow efficiency. By implementing an AI-aided metadata standardization tool, researchers found reduced reading times for various CT examinations, suggesting that standardized DICOM metadata could streamline operations and enhance image accessibility. The study evaluated the tool's accuracy across several imaging characteristics and analyzed reading times before and after the tool's deployment at a teleradiology provider servicing around 40 NHS trusts. Significant reductions in reading times were observed, with estimated annual time savings of approximately 270 hours, although gains for some examinations were inconsistent. The findings indicate that AI DICOM standardization may facilitate the integration of AI tools in clinical imaging, although the exact mechanisms for improved efficiency remain unclear.
