The American College of Radiology (ACR) has expressed support for the inclusion of the Radiology Outpatient Ordering Transmission (ROOT) Act in the Patients First Act, a bipartisan initiative aimed at updating Medicare provider payments. The ROOT Act aims to modernize the implementation of Medicare's imaging Appropriate Use Criteria program, potentially saving Medicare an estimated $2 billion and beneficiaries $1.5 billion over the next decade. ACR's CEO, Dana H. Smetherman, emphasized that this inclusion could enhance access to appropriate imaging while minimizing unnecessary and costly scans. The Patients First Act was introduced by three U.S. Representatives, reflecting a collaborative effort from the GOP and Democratic Doctors Caucuses.
