A study from Loma Linda University School of Medicine has demonstrated that specific fluoroscopy techniques and protective protocols can significantly reduce radiation exposure for pregnant surgeons. Urology resident Ruby Kuang, MD, who is pregnant, was featured on the cover of the Journal of Urology alongside this research, which addresses concerns about the low number of women in endourology—highlighting that only 5% of endourologists are female. The study found that with protective measures, a pregnant surgeon could safely perform about 11,000 procedures before hitting the annual radiation limit, compared to just 12 without protection. The study aims to reassure women considering urology and promote better radiation safety protocols. Current trends show an increase in female applicants in the field, with 42% of matched applicants in the 2025 urology match being women.
