‘We deserve better’: Residents demand action to extend radition exposure compensation - Las Vegas Review-Journal

Federal funding for compensation and free test screenings for downwinders and former Nevada Test Site workers is set to sunset next year. The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, which provides compensation to individuals and families affected by nuclear testing fallout, is due to expire in June 2024. Sheron Carter, whose family has experienced cancer-related deaths after working at the Nevada Test Site, is demanding lawmakers take action to compensate affected individuals and their families. Three bills have been proposed in Congress this year to extend or amend the existing law, but none have been brought before a committee. The bills aim to expand downwind areas, increase compensation amounts, and provide medical benefits. If the law expires, not only will compensation end, but free medical screenings offered by grant-funded programs will also cease.
